About this event

“The socially-conscious Grade 9 students at Westminster Junior High School have decided to experience first-hand what it is like to go hungry. They are organizing a 30-hr hunger fundraiser on May 2-3 and have chosen to support One Child’s Village and their work in Kenya.

Each student who chooses to participate has to sign a “contract” to go a full 30 hours with only juice and water to sustain them while participating in activities and sessions in their overnight stay at the school. “Most of us at Westminster understand that education is the key to preventing and ending poverty; however, many of us have a difficult time knowing the struggle that comes with trying to learn on an empty stomach. That’s exactly what this fundraiser serves to teach us!” Angela Saxby, teacher at Westminster Junior High.

Last year’s class raised $8505.75 that is being used for extensive construction at Kawangware Children’s Center. They also had an amazing opportunity of a midnight video conference with some of their peers in Nairobi. We can’t wait to see the success and personal growth of this year’s class. If you would like to support the class, or a particular student, in their reflection and increased awareness
